The end of the 1970s was a productive period in the career of Chicago tenor saxophonist Fred Anderson. In 78 he opened Birdhouse, a now legendary club on Lincoln Avenue that was in fact only sporadically active as a performance space, hampered by legal difficulties and license disputes from its inception. A year earlier,
Anderson had made his initial appearance in Europe; he returned numerous times in the period, leading ensembles and working as featured guest with Dieter awischnig and the Austrian pianist's group Neighbours. Anderson had made his recording debut back in '66 on Joseph Jarman's Song For (Delmark), but it wasn't until the late 70s that he began releasing records under his name, and even then only for a short time. Indeed, after recording three LPs with his own groups and one with Neighbours, he didn't release a new recording for fifteen years.
